Athletics

  • At Journeys Lutheran School, the introduction of athletics provides an exciting opportunity for students with unique learning needs to engage in physical activity, teamwork, and personal growth.

Volleyball is a dynamic team sport that promotes coordination, communication, and social interaction. Students will learn the basic skills of serving, passing, and setting, all while encouraging one another on the court. Adaptations will be made to ensure inclusivity, such as modifying the height of the net or using a larger, softer ball for better handling. The focus will be on fostering a supportive environment where every player can contribute, enhancing their confidence and social skills.

Basketball offers a fast-paced environment that helps improve motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and strategic thinking. Students will participate in basic drills focusing on dribbling, shooting, and teamwork. Through small-sided games, students can experience the thrill of scoring while developing their individual skills in a less overwhelming setting. Emphasizing collaboration and respect for teammates, basketball will help students build friendships and learn the importance of working together toward a common goal.

Both sports aim to create a sense of belonging within the school community, promoting physical health and self-esteem while respecting each student's unique abilities.
